The Publishing House Wort & Bild in Baierbrunn near Munich is publishing the Apotheken Umschau for 50 years. With a circulation of over 7 million copies, the Apotheken Umschau is the leading health care magazine in Germany. Other titles include Diabetiker-Ratgeber, Senioren-Ratgeber, Ärztlicher Ratgeber, Baby & Familie and medizini. Furthermore, the publisher offers an extensive online portal.

The Mission

The mission of Wort & Bild magazines as well as other media of the publishing house is to responibly and reliably inform broad levels of the population about health care issues. The main focus lies on current and firm scientific research that boosts personal well-being. It is essential that the articles and contents are written in such a way, that laymen can understand them, even if the topic is about complex medical and pharmaceutical topics.

The Task

Since 2003 Wort & Bild is using SoftCare K4 for their production. In 2006, the task of delivering and implementing the page planning software JournalDesigner was given to SNAP. The goal was to enable collaboration between the editorial and advertisement departments.

The Project

Advertisements are booked in Verlagsmanager and placed via JournalDesigner. A bi-directional interface between SoftCare K4 and JournalDeisgner delivers the placement of advertisements, the production planning and any changes in realtime. The status of the editorial production is updated in the page planning system automatically and the advertisements are embedded into the InDesign layout.

Furthermore, all dates and times relevant to the production process are automatically transferred from JournalDesigner to Microsoft Outlook and Apple iCal calendar clients, including reminders and e-mail notification.

This way, the editorial and advertisement department as well as production are always informed about the current status of the entire production process.
